Some of you might have already heard about what's going on in LJ land, and if you haven't I suggest you read about it here. You've probably noticed already that they're giving you the option to switch to the new friend list via a big bright link at the top of your friends page.

I tried it and I switched back which thankfully you can still do. There is about 1000+ comments on that post I linked above and I have yet to read even one that sings the praises of the new change. Folks, sometimes change isn't good.

I'm waiting to see if LJ pays attention. The majority of my time on livejournal is spent on my friends page. I bought a paid account in part to be able to customize my entire journal however I want. If they take that away, I don't see the point anymore. Furthermore, I am really not a fan of the style they're imposing. I don't know if they will offer us options to at least change the colours.

I'm looking into other blog platform options. It's looking like dreamwidth right now, mostly because most of you are already on it, but I'm open to checking out blogspot, wordpress or even hosting it on my own. Lately I'm finding out about updates (stories, CC, etc) through twitter, tumblr and google reader anyway. But like I said, I'm waiting to see if LJ implements this thing in full (ignoring pretty much all the feedback begging them otherwise), and then I'll make up my mind.

If you are on DW, let me know. Here's mine: (I should update it :P)

For me it isn't so much that I don't like the new layout, it hurts. I already don't participate in most communities which use the site scheme because I don't need the added headache. I hadn't thought of a combination of self hosted/twitter/tumblr. It makes sense. I need to look into that.

Yeah I'm always keeping an eye out for twitter people from this comm, more so than tumblr. Right now, I still think tumblr is a little messy, even though I do like using it. The downside is that its easy to miss updates. I am more inclined lately to click on someone's link if they advertised on twitter, but that is totally just me.

You should be able to read communities in your own site scheme, no? Unless they're throwing that away too, ugh. LJ!!!*shakes fist*

I'm on DW - same name as this one. I posted on Ale's ( my opinion about Blogspot's service - I don't really care for it and it's not very easy to navigate or customize. :/

Feel free to add me m'dear <3

My thoughts when I saw that consisted mostly of "why?!?!?!" :P

It's a sad thing that the LJ Sims community isn't as active and bubbly as it once was, with many players, creators and storytellers migrating to other platforms or falling away (myself included...). If this goes through it might be the death blow...
I haven't posted to LJ for so long and only browse the friends page and try to comment occasionally, so indeed this would be pretty much fatal. I have my journal backed up (privately) on my dreamwidth and would probably make all those posts visible there, link feeds to my LJ friends so I could read them on DW's reading page (I think that's possible?) -- and if I ever get back into the blogging it would be there.

Considering the enormous amount of negative comments, LJ might decide to take back this reform -- but even if they do, it would not be a loss to migrate to DW in my opinion. There have been so many stupidities from LJ's side and DW is a friendly, open-minded and responsible company in many ways. (Layout customising/coding could be fancier, but it might have become more advanced in the time I've been away.) I would personally be a lot happier supporting a site with a good ethos or at least one that I agree with.

I have my RBH story on Blogspot and think it is good when you want to costumize the looks of the blog - but it's useless for socializing. Sigh! It has been so nice here on LJ but now I fear that the exodus will speed up. I noticed long ago that more and more people seemed to be moving on to DW.

I'm also wondering why they need to do this. At least give us some information whether this can be opted out of or if they'll give us an option to customise.

In general, I agree, the LJ sims comm seems to be going away. But tumblr is strong and I can see why. It makes it really easy to post quick updates and pictures and for many simmers being able to update their legacies that way (instead of in full blog story format) is very appealing. Its good to embrace it. But just beccause of the way tumblr is set up, its not at all convenient for a full story post.

LJ was perfect for what I needed because they gave us ease of blogging, customisation and communities! I haven't found that anywhere else, and even DW just seems like a rudimentary LJ clone. but i agree about supporting a better company.

I'd still follow you though no matter where and what you posted. ^_^

The nice thing about LJ is that I can access other platforms blog feeds. So it becomes a nifty RSS reader. I should add yours ^_^

I dont know what's going t happen to the lj comm. i wish I could tell you to park your stories here instead only to watch the shift elsewhere. I dont think its too difficult to keep up with eachother now. I have a few hours before I head out and i may spend it cleaning up my DW. I will still keep an eye out here though.

No need to add my Blogspot story - it is a finished story. I should perhaps re-write the chapters though. The Swedish version (that I made this summer encouraged by a young Swedish reader) is much better - not only because it is my native language.

For me LJ is a place for mingling, so when people move on, I will probably follow to another platform. Hopefully that won't be necessary for a while yet.

I'm more confused as to the point in changing the friends page. I mean, it's not totally catastrophic in my eyes: it's not like they're taking away my theme from my own blog. I don't see how it's drastically different from what it was before. The filter looks useful; if I could have that and keep my style I'd be happy. Can't stand endless scroll, though (and it's especially horrid for people with slower machines/connections).

No, its not catastrophic, and like I said, I may still remain. What LJ does well is community and customisabilty. I will go out on a limb to say that the friend page is the heart of Livejournal, not necessarily all the individual blogs. People discover other blogs through the communities. People like me enjoy hanging out on their friends page waiting for the latest updates. Its a big deal to many of us who like to control the decor of that environment. If it becomes less aesthetically appealing, it makes it a little more boring to hang out there. Even the abilities to change colours is a huge deal so I hope they at least give us that. I think its the principle of forcing a certain scheme on us that is bothering me.

After your post I checked out the new layout for the friends page and I agree with you, it's incredibly awful. It looks like a badly programmed amateur site run by someone who hasn't learnt yet how to change their default fonts and colours on their website. I do really love LiveJournal though, since well, DreamWidth.. it just seems so dead there. Also the fact that entries more than 2 weeks old don't appear on your friends page drives me nuts. :P

I hope this change will be optional, but I'm afraid it's not. Anyway, I added you on DreamWidth. I'm a secret reader of your story. :D (who still needs to catch up..)

Hahaha! It does look pretty amateur doesn't it? I really am wondering if they will give us the option still to customize that. But why wouldn't they tell us that it's a future option in the release?

I love LJ too and all the connections I've made here. I think we could get used to DW too if it comes to it that there's a move towards it. I don't know, I really am hesitant to leave.

And thank you so much for reading. Take all the time you want (apparently I am, lol!)

I don't like the new f-page layout either, and I really hope that it's not going to be a permanate change. I do have a DW, but I've only added downloads there for some time now (all other updates are on LJ). It's too bad that it's not so lively community as LJ's is, atleast for now.
Anyway, here's my DW just in case. :)

I added you, thanks. :) Hopefully the community could come back in some way. I'm hoping LJ doesn't make this change permanent and if they do that they still give us options.

Hmm... I checked it out, and while I don't love it, I don't think it would be a dealbreaker for me. I have a DW (same name as here) but never quite liked it over there as much (esp. like Voleste said about how the Friends page there only goes back 2 weeks). Even though it's been awfully quiet around LJ lately, I'll probably stick it out as long as possible!

Like I said, it may be a deal breaker for me if it doesn't allow us to either opt out or customize it. I'm hoping they do. As much as possible, I'd like to stay with LJ, there's still a lot about it that I do like. I'm glad that there are ways to tie everyone's blogs together still (through RSS feeds and what not).

This is horrible! D: If it looked at least pretty it would be quite okay, but the friendspage looks like straight from 2001. I'm not really participating in the sims community anymore, but I have a private journal too and this ruins it a bit for me.

I just don't get it - what did they intend to improve by that?

Date: 2012-10-31 06:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
LOL, from 2001 sounds about right. Even then we had the option to customize our pages! Oh god, I've been on LJ (through my personal journal) for a loooooong time.

It's a little sad that you're not in the simming comm anymore. I'm sure people would love to see the Bjurstas again. But I understand and I hope you're doing okay!

I've just realized that I had my first livejournal in 2004, but I think the designs weren't that different between 2001 and 2004. But you're right, it's shocking how many years we've already spent on this page!

Aww, thank you! I miss the community and my Bjurstas a lot sometimes! I actually wanted to come back a few times, but then my laptop couldn't runs Sims 2 anymore and I don't have an alternative ... I hope that some people will still be here on livejournal whenever I'm able to come back. :D

But I'm doing great! I've started university in October and I'm enjoying it very much! :)

Thanks for friending my dw!

I have a permanent account here and I'm reluctant to abandon that due to the the features i.e. extra icons, Scrapbook space but I really don't like the sound of these changes. I don't like tumblr and I have no interest in having an account there. I check other people's in order to keep up with fandom but I find them frustrating to navigate and the infinite scroll does not get on with my Internet connection. Other commenters have said how dead the DW community is and they are right, the only way that'll change is a mass migration of all simmers from here to there. It may well happen if the LJ staff can't learn to leave well alone.

No problem, thank you for friending mine!

I still have a paid account that is due up early next year. I know what you mean, there are still a lot of features here I like, but the BIG thing for me was the ability to customize. If the LJ sims comm is still strong here, then I may still stick around, but it looks like moving to DW isn't that difficult. I don't know why LJ decided to do this either. I really can't think of a good end-user friendly reason why this happening.

I switched and then swapped back. The new friends page thing is kind of annoying - not to the point where it's unusable, but to the point where I just don't want it.

There have been times when I've looked into other platforms, but I simply dread re-friending everybody, finding new communities, starting from scratch promoting my stories, and the like. Here's to hoping they realize that if they don't keep the old guard on this site, it's more than likely going to slowly disappear. :(
